The number of Internet users in Vietnam has reached 52 percent of its population, according to the Vietnam Telecommunications Authority (VNTA).
More than 47.3 million people now have Internet access, including 36.28 million broadband subscribers.
The number of broadband subscribers has increased from 22.3 million in 2014.
Vietnam’s six mobile networks have 120.6 million subscribers in total.
Landline phone numbers, on the other hand, fell to 6.7 million, equal to around seven subscribers per 100 people. In 2013, there were 9.5 million landline numbers.
Le Thi Ngoc Mo, deputy director of VNTA, said many companies in the industry have grown strongly this year, including Hanoi Telecom, FPT Telecom, VTVCab and SCTV.
The major shares, however, still belong to three giants Viettel, VNPT and MobiFone.
VNTA said that FPT Telecom has asked for permission to provide 4G service, the world’s latest and fastest mobile technology at the moment, in Vietnam.
Earlier, Viettel, VNPT’s VinaPhone and MobiFone had been allowed to do so. Viettel has launched the service on a trial basis in the southern town of Vung Tau since December 12, 2015.
